According to the top 100 roofing contractors as determined by Roofing Contractor Magazine, the rebound from the 2008 recession is in full swing. While 2014 had its challenges, specifically harsh winters and skilled-labor shortages, the majority of contractors reported an increase in annual sales revenue over 2013.

An improved economy combined with hard work and planning resulted in significant achievements for several of the top contractors. Anthony Schena, #71 on the list and CEO of Schena Roofing & Sheet Metal in Chesterfield, Mich., said his company increased its revenue by 35% this past year. Schena was one of only two companies from Michigan to make the Top 100 list.

Schena also states, “All indicators are pointing to a strong 2015 for us. We have a backlog of work, and bidding activity has been flourishing throughout the winter months. Many property owners put off large capital expenditures when the recession hit in 2008 – Michigan was especially affected. Now that businesses are seeing better financial performance, they’re willing to start investing in their property again.”

The Top 100 roofers also shared significant insight into their companies, the industry and the economy. Most notably is consensus on taking adversity (economic downturn) and turning it into opportunity.

Schena agrees, noting that through the lean times, it’s imperative to look closely at your business and find any untapped market areas: expanded service offerings, internal processes, new products and project ‘sweet spots’.

Having been through it before, Schena admits, “Change isn’t always easy or apparent. But it is necessary to keep pace with the industry and be ready to adapt if the economy takes a downturn.”
